Zinc Dams South Africa

In recent years, South African farmers have had to concern themselves with, and plan for, water restrictions, droughts, and water shortages. There are some practical solutions that can be implemented, and one of them is to harvest rainwater. There are then a number of options to choose from when it comes to rainwater harvesting, and the storage of the water thereafter.

Corrugated zinc water dams provide a safe solution that won’t release chemicals over time, like their plastic counterparts do. They are also easy to clean and require very little maintenance due to their durability.

Benefits of Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting provides a host of benefits, but it is imperative that the water is stored correctly in order to be protected, conserved, and ready for use immediately. Oftentimes, water tanks are kept in harsh conditions, on big lots with little protection from the sun’s UV rays, which can result in the release of harmful chemicals in tanks made from different materials.

The benefits of rainwater harvesting include:

  • Less costs on water supplied by the government.
  • Easy access to water in remote areas that are not necessarily equipped for ground irrigation access.
  • Reduced need for imported water.
  • Promotes both water and energy conservation.
  • Improves the quality and quantity of groundwater, and subsequently, the produce.
  • Does not require a filtration system for landscape irrigation.
  • Saves the on the need for underground infrastructure.
  • Majority of systems are relatively simple, easy to install, and to operate (this includes zinc dams).
  • It reduces soil erosion, stormwater runoff, flooding, and pollution of surface water.
  • The farm will be unaffected by rollouts of water restrictions.

Zinc Dams in South African Industries

Zinc dams are useful in many industries, specifically:

  • Agriculture
  • Aquaculture
  • Forestry
  • Hydroponics
  • Industrial
  • Mining

Not only are zinc dams non-corrosive, they also have a long lifespan of between 15 to 20 years. You will receive maintenance instructions from your zinc dam provider on how to care for your dam to ensure that it has a prolonged life. They are also fire-resistant and can be lined with a protective coating that ensures additional safety for the water stored in the dam. They come in a variety of different sizes, and are aesthetically pleasing with a neat exterior. Top of FormBottom of FormBottom of Form

Water Planning in Agriculture

In order to run a farm effectively, water planning and preparation is an essential part of ensuring welfare, productivity, and profitability. To plan for both annual and daily water usage, it is very important to understand your water requirements, as well as your capacity, and ensure that you have a sufficient amount to fulfil your needs.

Zinc Dam Accessories

There are multiple accessories that can be added onto a zinc dam to ensure an even longer life, and extra protection for the contents. These are optional and will depend on your needs.

Reservoir Covers

All reservoirs can be fitted with either a 280g PVC mesh net or 550g reinforced PVC solid cover. An additional reservoir cover reduces and may even eliminate the risk of harmful UV rays, as well as preventing any unwanted debris from landing in the water. It can protect against unnecessary evaporation and, in case of the solid 550g cover, will also prevent algae growth.

UV Shield

When a reservoir cover hasn’t been incorporated, a UV shield is recommended. It also protects against UV rays and prolongs the dam’s lifespan.
